Constructivism is a perspective of learning and cognition that is gaining a large following in recent times and its origins may be traced to the works of Piaget, Vygotsky, Dewey and Bruner. Constructivism is not a unitary concept but is a continium. One the one end is radical constructivism which attribute its origins to von Glaserfeld who proposed that reality is within the individual and knowledge is constructed from individual experience. On the other end is the notion of cognitive constructivism as suggested by Jean Piaget, who proposed that knowledge is constructed through three mechanisms; namely, assimilation (fitting is a new experience into an exisiting mental structure), accomodation (revising an existing schema because of a new experience); and Equilibrium (seeking cognitive stability through assimilation & accomodation). In between these two extremes is the notion of social constructivism which has its origins in the theories proposed by Lev Vygotsky, who gave importance to cultural and social contexts in influencing learning; namely the role of the community, the people around, significant adults, culture and language.
