Some psychologists have attempted to provide a cognitive definition of adolescence which includes the ability to reason using symbols, abstractions and complex problem-solving strategies in thinking. However, it is not clear when does this cognitive transition begin because some studies indicate that at the adolescent level, some individuals are still not capable of abstact thinking. Cognitive development many vary considerably age-wise during the adolescense perriod (i.e 12-18 years). A cognitive definition of adolescence may best be seen as limited in its ability to set out precisely the beginning and ending of adolescence (Adams, Gullotta & Markstrom-Adams, 1994).
The CoPS Profile
This study attempts to provide a cognitive profile of the Malaysian adolescent and will measure the following:
- language literacy
- quantitative literacy
- science literacy
- political literacy
- legal literacy
- consumer literacy
- generic cognitive skills
- thinking skills
These mental abilities will be measured using a paper and pencil test and will be operationally defined by individual researchers developing the various instruments.
